Valley Improvement Projects (VIP) is a grassroots organization based in Modesto working to empower underrepresented and marginalized residents in the Northern San Joaquin Valley through social and environmental justice advocacy. VIP addresses a wide range of issues, including air quality, pesticide reform, zero waste, climate justice, sustainable development, housing equity, and community health. Through community education, grassroots organizing, and partnerships with local organizations and public agencies. VIP works to ensure that the voices of residents are included in decision-making efforts that affect their communities. In recent years, VIP has focused on transportation as a key part of its environmental justice work. They led a Community Transportation Needs Assessment to identify gaps in transit access and explore clean mobility solutions like micro-transit, EV car share, and safer walking and biking infrastructure in the City of Modesto. As part of the Stanislaus Sustainable Communities Coalition (SSCC), VIP worked with local organizations to propose policies for the environmental justice element of Modesto’s General Plan, advocating for safer streets, improved transit access, and equitable distribution of public resources in underserved communities. VIP also participates in regional efforts to expand EV equity and continues to push for community-driven, sustainable transportation solutions that improve health and quality of life.
